“Keep going,” Sam yelled. “We’ve got to save the town.”

The line of stones shifted, some tumbled into the water. Sam’s gang worked hard to shore up the defences. The deadline was five o’clock.

White froth tipped over the stones and cascaded into their safe haven.

Billy cried. “It’s too hard, Sam. Can’t we stop?”

Sam threw a stone on the heap and looked at his watch. “Okay. We’ll call it day. Me Ma said be back in time for tea.”

The troop of boys, their feet sodden, left the pile of pebbles in the middle of the stream and trudged home.

Love the story, the way the beginning drew me into some great drama which then turned into boys playing heroes. Imagination is such a powerful thing.

Restores one’s faith in troops of boys! A town saved in time for tea. Nice one.

Great fun. You took me back to my childhood, I always found building a temporary dam just deepened the local rivers enough to swim.

We have a creek behind our garden and kids often play dam there, and secretly I wish I could play with them. 😉 A lovely story.
